Samantha Mark isn’t the only relative trying to get in touch with Meghan Markle via extremely ill-advised press opportunities. Thomas Markle continues to go the extra mile to get in touch with his estranged daughter, contacting the Archbishop of Canterbury, in hopes that the archbishop will be able to help him make amends. He’s also researching his legal options, and saying he is willing to travel to London, given Meghan’s pregnancy, which he found out over the radio. According to U.K. tabloid the Daily Mirror, he intends to claim that as a grandfather, he will have visitation rights to see the child.
“Thomas says the Markle blood will be as much in the child’s veins as the ‘blue blood’ of the royals, and he has ‘rights,’” an anonymous source told the Daily Mirror. “He admits mistakes, but with Meghan pregnant, he is desperate to heal the rift. Thomas has reached out to Kensington Palace more so since news of Meghan’s pregnancy broke, hoping the baby will be what finally breaks their estrangement.”
According to U.K. law, however, grandparents do not automatically have any legal rights to see their grandchildren in the U.K. If grandparents cannot come to an agreement via the child’s parents, they may go through the courts to apply for a child arrangement order, which will take into consideration the welfare of the child. A child being raised by the literal prince of England is, unfortunately for Thomas, probably not going to be the subject of a court case.
Thomas Markle, who has not spoken with his daughter since May, reportedly hopes that the soon-to-be royal baby will be named after him, if it’s a boy.
Meghan has already spent the last few months avoiding her half-sister, Samantha, who has alternated between slamming her in the press and traveling to Buckingham Palace in the hope that the two could arrange a meeting. (She was denied.) Meghan has remained tight-lipped on the subject of her family, but according to sources, is not thrilled with the family drama playing out publicly. So that’s probably a no on the baby being named Thomas.
