Alita: Battle Angel is Getting a New Trailer on Monday
The latest trailer for Alita: Battle Angel is set to arrive on Monday. The cyberpunk action film from director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron is due out during the crowded December 21 release window. Its competition includes James Wan’s Aquaman and the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.
Alita is skipping Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this week. Instead, Fox held a scavenger hunt to give out tickets to a presentation in the Regal Theater Horton Plaza. This is a departure from showing off their movie in the same room as everyone else, but it’s an interesting one. That’s not to say the anticipated film won’t make any appearances at the show. Attendees will definitely have some opportunities to pick up tie-in merchandise. But actual news will wait until after the weekend.
The Twitter account for the movie recently revealed that the new Alita trailer is going to drop this Monday at 8am PST/11am EST. Afterward, fans can participate in a live question and answer session with some of the people behind the movie. The panelists will be Cameron, Rodriguez, producer Jon Landau, and star Rosa Salazar.
Alita: Battle Angel is based on the similarly named manga, Battle Angel Alita, by artist Yukito Kishiro. It tells the story of a cyborg who starts the story on a trash heap. A “cybernetic doctor” finds and restores her, but she has no memory of her identity or history. All she remembers is a mythical fighting technique, an ability she uses to become a bounty hunter, while searching for clues to who she is and where she came from.
The film version has been in development for almost 20 years, but technological limitations kept it from happening sooner. Originally attached director Cameron has since passed the duties on to Rodriguez so he can focus on his Avatar sequels. Rodriguez is of course more than up to the task. He has a history in action with films like Sin City and Desperado, and his Spy Kids series no doubt helped prepare him for the more technical demands of the project. Alita will also star Christoph Waltz as the doctor, Jennifer Connelly as the villain, and Watchmen’s Jackie Earle Haley. It has some star power and a dedicated fan base going for it already, and it will need those advantages as it wrestles with the other two blockbusters that weekend to fill the hole the absence of a new Star Wars movie is leaving in December.
